My neighborhood has had some nighttime vandalism, so I wanted to install a security camera. However, the neighborhood association forbids "architectural modifications", and you can't just slap a camera on the front of your home. This camera, with its compact size, seemed like the solution. I removed its base, leaving just a two-inch-long cylinder, and set it on a ledge outside a window with a putty cradle to hold it in place. I taped (should caulk) shut the little screw holes left by removal of the base. The cord from the power adapter is narrow and flexible, and the window shut over it easily. The camera is inconspicuous and has made it through many rains with no problem. See the customer image captioned, "Windowsill installation".

The camera's daylight picture is acceptable. You even have the option of running it off a 9V battery. I have detected no interference from my wireless router or cordless phones.

Now for the bad news. The camera's maximum... Read more

Pro's:

+Easy to setup, only took 2 minutes.

+Compact size

Con's:

-Poor picture quality.

-Very poor sound.

-Interference from everything - even after diabling the wireless network, unplugging the cordless phones, and shutting off the baby monitor, we still had a jumping lines and static.

If you live in a remote area without neighbors, have no microwave, cordless phone, or wireless network, then this is the camera for you; otherwise, search elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Budget Solution, January 5, 2006
Roger_007 (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Swann Night Hawk 2.4 GHz Wireless Outdoor Security System (Electronics)
I have 4 cameras and the receiver set to loop. The receiver cycles each camera in a loop for ~5 seconds, or you can manually select a single camera. Each camera has a 60 degree viewing angle. I put 3 of the cameras in a cluster with one pointing left, one center and one pointing right so I have a 180 degree view (The 4th to a different location). Otherwise, the 60 degree view is not very wide and a lot will be missed. The video is so-so. The audio is, well, worthless. But, for the cost vs a commercial high end camera system, it's about a 4th of the cost. The video is not really too bad in a well lighted area without interference and close to the receiver. The interference from a PC router (2.4GHz), a microwave (completely messes it up), a cordless phone running 2.4GHz or anything else seems to interfear with these cameras quite easily. Still again, for a budget security solution, it's not too bad. The warranty is only for 1 year. The camera features say it is for outdoor use. Hmmm,,,... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Worked well for a while, April 24, 2006
O.S. (Chile) - See all my reviews
I got the ABI breathalyzer a couple of months ago and was very fond of it at first. Ok, the beeping is annoying, but it seemed to provide precise readings, which were interesting especially the day after....However, the unit got progressively decalibrated, with readings now about twice as high as they should be, and there is no way to calibrate it on your own. I will try another brand next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars DOT approved - accurate at .08 - good product, April 2, 2009
Mr. Ersh (St Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews
I've owned mine for a couple years. It's a great product and approved by the DOT to be accurate within .01 at .08. In other words if you blow .07 you are between .06 & .08. Using common sense I feel the machine is certainly accurate within it's technical specifications. At .08 on this machine I have a decent buzz but feel like I can drive fine, but I can see why the cops wouldn't agree.

I've read some comments like, "I blew .30" and wasn't passed out. Well the fact that you blew .30 on this machine is meaningless. Even the fact that you blew .15 is meaningless. This is a preliminary screening device intended to be accurate only near .08.

Note: The DOT approves breathalyzers, "for law enforcement use." You can buy one of these if you'd like, they start around $500.00 and are accurate to .005 from 0.00 all the way to .40.

If you treat this tool like a toy and take it out to the bars you will throw off the calibration and will need to send it in... Read more

This review is from: Alcohawk ABI Digital Alcohol Breath Tester (Health and Beauty)
This product worked very well. I took it on a field test out bar hopping all weekend. Other people didn't rate it so well, but I will only work if you follow the guidelines. This means you do have wait a little after drinking before blowing into it. If you blow into it while drinking you are blowing pure alcohol into the machine and it will give you a much higher reading. If you do wait at least 10-15 mins, the reading will be accurate. I ended up blowing a .23 at the end of the night which was probably right on the money. I was very hammered. The next morning, eight hours later, I blew a .10. I was still to drunk to drive the next day. Good to know things like that I would never have thought.

The only bad things about it is the fact its slightly bigger than I would have liked. I could still carry it comfortably in my jeans pocket, but its bigger than a cell phone. Also, it is made out of plastic that doesn't seem very durable. Drunks have a tendacy to drop things, I dont... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Kidde KN-COSM-B battery-operated carbon monoxide and smoke alarm combines two important safety devices into a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that makes four announcements: fire, carbon monoxide, low battery, or smart hush activation. The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement. This unit uses three AA batteries, protecting you and your family even during a power outage.

This alarm uses ionization-sensing technology for the smoke alarm. Ionization-sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric-sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help ensure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm
The Kidde combination carbon monoxide and smoke alarm includes a voice warning system that eliminates confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) danger, of low battery, or of hush-mode setting.

Alarm Warnings
Fire: The red LED will flash and be accompanied by three long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning message: "Fire! Fire!" The alarm will repeat the pattern until smoke is eliminated.

Carbon Monoxide: Four short alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning: "Warning--carbon monoxide!" This continues until the unit is reset or the CO is eliminated.

Low Battery: One chirp followed by warning: "Low battery." The red LED light will flash. This pattern will continue every minute for the first hour. After the first hour, the red LED light will flash once every minute and will be accompanied by the chirp sound. The low-battery warning will only sound once every 15 minutes.

Voice Hush Indication: "Hush activated" and "Hush canceled" voice announcement.

Peak Level Memory: If the alarm had detected a CO level of 100ppm or higher when the test/reset button is pressed, the unit will announce, "Carbon monoxide previously detected" to warn of the CO incident.

Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.

This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately, the unit will verbally announce, "Hush mode activated," and the green LED will flash every two seconds for approximately 10 minutes.

Reliable Battery Power, Indicator LED, Test Feature and Low-Battery Warning
The battery-powered alarm provides continuous protection, even during power outages. Because this alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm also contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.

If any form of battery failure is detected, the red LED light will flash and the unit will chirp one time, followed by the warning message, "low battery." This cycle will occur once every minute, and will continue for at least seven days.

Seven years after initial power up, this unit will chirp" every 30 seconds. This is an operational end-of-life feature that will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end-of-life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard.

The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.7 inches deep, and it features a neutral white finish. It includes tamper-resistant features to deter vandalism or theft. This combination smoke/CO alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars SAVED MY FAMILIES LIFE!!!, December 7, 2008
RMT "RMT" (Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
We live in a 4 level split home. Our gas furnace is on the lower, 3rd level. Two years ago we had several smoke alarms, but only one carbon monoxide detector on the top, bedroom level of our home. One early Saturday morning we awoke to the voice of this alarm broadcasting, "WARNING! CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED!" over and over again. I got out of bed and took the batteries out of the unit. By then my then 16 year old daughter came out of her room and was watching me. I told her to go back to bed, but she asked me why we weren't going outside to our designated emergency spot. I thought I was being a bad example after all the years of telling the children to get our of the house if an alarm went off. I didn't think there was a problem. I assumed the unit was broken or needed a new battery. I wasn't thinking clearly. So, I put the batteries back in to see if it would go off again. It did. She again asked why we weren't following the rules and going outside, so we left the house... Read more

This review is from: Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free.

What attracted me to this model were its many features:

First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.

Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future.

We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably. Notably, recent studies have shown that children can... Read more

This review is from: Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm (Tools & Home Improvement)
After looking at the excellent ratings for this product, I purchased two units and installed them - one each in the bedroom and the utility room. One day, I was getting the toddler to sleep when I smelt smoke and something burning. Upon exiting the bedroom (which has one detector), I noticed that the house was full of thick black smoke from a "microwave cooking accident". There was no fire. The fact that the smoke detector did not go off bothered me and I did a bit of reading on the detection systems. Turns out that there are two detection mechanisms - ionization and photoelectric...and to cut a long story short, one needs to have both types of mechanisms in operation. The manual of this product pretty much says the same thing on page 6. However, it does not tell me which smoke detection technology the unit uses - information that I can use to purchase a different smoke detector with the other mechanism to compliment this one. I can only know how good this product is when it responds... Read more
